Why The Outback?

The Outback Hair Salon is 21 years old this year. For more than two decades, the salon has helped supply a calm and comfortable place for people to come and have their hair done. Since starting out in 1997, Paula and the team have given Sydenham a well-loved hairdresser and boutique salon.

Paula’s Story

In 1995 I travelled for a year & worked my way around the world cutting the hair of fellow travellers in Canada, Hawaii, New Zealand & Thailand before settling for a few months in a wonderful salon in Sydney,  Australia. On returning to the UK, I decided to create my own unique boutique hair salon, and I took up residence in the back of a barber’s shop in Sydenham.

The tiny salon flourished & grew & was so successful the appointment book was always full to bursting.  We had five exciting years ‘out-the-back’, cementing some wonderful client friendships.   I was also so happy to be able to bring my dog Benji (RIP) to work with me! He started the trend of The Outback’s canine friends. In 2002  we moved across the road to our current location in a brand new refurbished building in Station Approach.  This is when our darling Jody joined the salon & stayed with us until March 2017, when she sadly passed away age 14.

I feel so lucky to be working in a job that I love and at the same time having fun evolving our boutique space, without the pretentiousness that can cause discomfort in other salons. That’s always been the Outback way.

We are always really happy when new clients visit us, equally as much as we still enjoy the patronage of our long-standing fantastically loyal clients, with whom I am eternally grateful for their continued custom & support.

Finally, a big heartfelt thank you to all my clients past & present, who have helped make The Outback hair salon the success it is today.

The Outback Team

Hey!  I’m Paula, the owner of The Outback Hair Salon. With over 30 years hairdressing experience, I have worked in a variety of salons, in the UK and overseas.  I am also a qualified hairdressing tutor. I adore hairdressing and the people you meet along the way.  I started the journey with The Outback in the summer of 1997, after visiting Australia.

Kira joined us after Jody sadly passed away last year. In her short time at the salon she has made a big impact. Kira joined us from the streets of Bucharest in Romania.  Having had a hard life out there, she is now enjoying her life in the salon. Though Kira was at first a very shy and unassuming dog, she is now full of life. She’s a sweet little tomboy,  who will come & greet you and help you relax while you’re here.

Saoirse is a Saturday assistant at the salon. She is hard-working & friendly &  has many talents & interests including sports, art & fashion.

Rose started as a Saturday assistant at the salon in June.  She is hard-working & very smiley & loves animals & art.
